Gov't looks to Housing Authority to address issues with affordable housing

A Housing Authority should be established, according to the Ministry of Works and Housing, in order to curb the abandonment of public housing projects.

The ministry is certain that such a body would carry out housing regulations and make sure that housing projects continued even in the event of a change in administration.

This follows the uproar over the government's controversial decision to sell the abandoned Saglemi Housing Project to a private company.

The government's 2009 agreement to build 200,000 housing units with the South Korean giant STX Corp also fell through.

Abdulai Abanga, deputy minister for works and housing, said the authority will see to it that projects for affordable housing are carried out in the nation by experts during a speech at the 2022 Ghana Property Awards.

"These initiatives were not conceptualized, managed, or planned by experts, but rather were influenced by political concerns," he claimed.

In order to achieve affordable housing, we are expecting that the Ghana Housing Authority would be founded with the help of highly trained people.

"The government-led housing projects should be a thing of the past," Mr. Abanga said. "They often struggle in execution, causing them to be halted and abandoned when there is a change of administration."

The housing need in Ghana has decreased recently from 2 million to 1.8 million.

Land banks have just been established, according to a recent announcement by the Ministry of Works and Housing, to provide the necessary infrastructure for affordable housing projects around the nation.

According to the Ministry, land banks would encourage private sector investment to facilitate the development of low-cost housing units for low-income people.
