As GWCL shuts down the Kyebi treatment facility once more, Okyenhene wants the galamseyers to be detained.

The Kyebi Treatment Plant of the Ghana Water Company Limited has been shut down due to high turbidity brought on by the ongoing contamination of the river Birim by illegal miners, sometimes known as galamseyers.

The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin II, revealed this to the Association of Small-Scale Miners during a courtesy visit.

The Okyehene demanded that all illegal miners working in Kyebi and its surroundings be detained right away.

The Akyem Abuakwa State Overlord further stated that all residents of the enclave are at risk for health problems as a result of the irresponsible behavior of illegal miners who operate day and night in the Birim river.

He called the illegal miners criminals who the IGP and Ghana Police Service must apprehend before prosecuting them.

Okyehene asked for retooling the inspectorates section of the Minerals Commission and other responsible authorities in both human and logistical capacities to help achieve the necessary results. Okyehene lamented the absence of oversight of water bodies throughout the years in the fight against galamsey.
