Today, October 14, 2022, a meeting between striking Metro Mass Transit Company Limited employees and the National Labour Commission (NLC) is scheduled.
Since October 12, the employees of the Transport Company have been engaging in a statewide sit-down strike over unpaid salaries and what they perceive to be the management team's inability to manage the company's business.
The National Labour Commission will step in to address the problems after Metro Mass passengers were left stranded across the nation.
Even though the group has agreed to meet with the Commission, the walkout will continue until their demands are met, the workers' union's Senior Staff Division secretary said.
"We want to hear from the President regarding the dismissal of the Managing Director, is the demand. The strike is still ongoing until then. We won't leave our seats to go and listen to the Commission since we don't know what they will say.
The workers put down their tools because their two months' worth of wages hadn't been paid yet.
They also want their managing director fired since they believe he is to fault for their current predicament.
The company's management has guaranteed that the employees would receive their August salary by Friday, October 14, 2022.
George Asante, the head of communications at Metro Mass, announced that the leadership of the employees will be contacted to end the strike as payment procedures were in progress.
We will be able to close the August payroll by Friday, and there will only be one month's worth of salary arrears. I don't believe it is appropriate for employees to demand the dismissal of their managing director in light of the current economic difficulties.
He also advised the striking employees to take into account the difficulties facing the business.
Mr. Asante gave the example of how higher gasoline prices have impacted the company's ability to generate income.
The corporation is unable to raise prices to match prices.
With 187 buses, Metro Mass Transit should be able to pay 2,000 workers.nationwide
