The government may sue Media General, a media business, and Godsbrain Smart, one of its broadcasters, in response to allegations that President Akufo-Addo engages in unlawful mining.
The National Media Commission will be consulted over the claims made by Mr. Smart, also known as Captain Smart, in a video that was made public, the government declared in a statement.
The statement stressed that the government's right to take legal action against Mr. Smart, Onua TV, and Media General is unaffected by the aforementioned move.
In addition to charging Mr. Smart with "unethical and irresponsible" journalism, the government said that "the film is meant to encourage disaffection for government and impede efforts to prevent illegal mining in the country."
The government expressed concern over false and misleading material being circulated "under the guise of journalistic discretion and free expression," according to the ministry.
The statement continued by saying that the allegations lacked merit and "impugns the character and integrity of the President, as well as the legitimacy and dedication of his fight against illegal and negligent mining."
The government has come under fire for only giving the fight against illegal mining lip service, but it insists that its commitment is "unwavering."
