GMA calls on the government to improve the economy in order to stop brain drain.

In order to stop the brain drain from the health sector, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) is pleading with the government to take swift action to solve the country's deteriorating economic position.

The Association claims that due to the country's economic situation as well as a rise in demand for their services overseas as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic's devastating impacts, doctors and other healthcare professionals are fleeing the country in large numbers.

Dr. Titus Beyuo, general secretary of the Ghana Medical Association, pleaded with physicians and other healthcare professionals not to leave the nation as it works with the government to improve working conditions.

He also urged the administration to take its time in trying to improve the financial situation.

"It's bad that we're in this situation, but rather than leaving the country, let's work together to solve the problem here. You have built a permanent solution for what initially seems to be a very transitory issue if you move and completely alter your course, or if you stop using the service. In order to overcome this, let's try to be devoted and optimistic while putting the right leadership and management in charge of the nation's affairs and the health service. But the government must be more cautious and must not take this lightly, according to the Ghana Medical Association's general secretary.

Dr. Beyuo raised concern in May 2022 that the Agenda 111 initiative had overlooked the issue of human resources in the healthcare industry.

"A basic concern is that the Agenda 111 [project] appears to be unrelated to the Ministry of Health's HR policy. Doctors and nurses are emigrating in large numbers right now. In May 2022, Dr. Beyuo claimed that the "brain drain has resumed in full force."
