Emphasis on property taxes: Vitus Azeem to the government

Ghana's Tax Justice Coalition has urged the government to focus income and property taxation as part of its goal for raising revenue.

The call comes in response to the 2.5% increase in VAT, the elimination of the mobile money barrier, and the 1.5% to 1% decrease in the rate of the tax.

According to the Coalition, if Parliament accepts the proposed VAT, it would solely affect the underprivileged and disadvantaged members of society.

In an interview, the Coalition's chairman, Vitus Azeem, asserted that property taxes are a preferable substitute.

"We are not talking about the lovely, costly houses over there; we are talking about tax on income, property, and wealth, for instance, when you travel to East Legon, you look at the roads. However, the roads there are better than the ones in Kasoa since they were developed with taxes paid by all Ghanaians.

Therefore, such folks ought to pay more than those in Kasoa. They must be pushed to pay more since they are in a better financial position to do so than those in Kasoa because they receive greater advantages than the rest of us. The Tax Justice Coalition Ghana Chairman stated, "Let's focus on property income and property taxes.
