VALCO employees rejected a 22% pay raise, according to management

The Volta Aluminium Company (VALCO) management claims that its employees rejected a 22 percent pay raise because they deemed it to be insufficient.

The business believed that the irate employees ought to have embraced this raise.

According to a statement from VALCO, the union executives initially requested a 62 percent compensation increase from the company's management but later lowered their demand to 55 percent.

The management of VALCO responded by stating that it has given the employees a 22 percent raise "with the certainty of greater escalation in the future as VALCO continues its efforts to locate a strategic investor to upgrade the factory."

The management of VALCO said that it urged the employees to take into account the current condition of the aluminum smelter, which had been experiencing losses up until 2021.

The smelter has been shut down due to the approximately 300 protesting workers.

The protesting employees have also demanded that their pay be tied to the dollar, which has recently appreciated significantly against the cedi.

The requests from the workers, according to VALCO, are "untenable and must be dismissed."

It also made clear to the workers union executives that if negotiations fail to resolve the issue, they will need to call in a neutral arbitrator.
