Sacking Ofori-Atta is insufficient; the government's size must also be decreased, according to Bokpin

Prof. Godfred A. Bokpin, an economics lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, has emphasized that the call for the resignation of Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta is insufficient to address the nation's economic problems.

The economics lecturer and expert added that much more work needs to be done before the repercussions of Ofori-expulsion Atta's will be seen in the economy, after requests for the Minister's removal from some New Patriotic Party lawmakers.

We want more changes than just that. Just replacing the Finance Minister won't amount to much. In addition, he [President Akufo-Addo] needs to scale back the size of the government as a whole, including the staff at the presidency. Additionally, he needs to extend that to State Owned Enterprises.

Furthermore, according to Prof. Bokpin, the size of the government is a contributing factor in the current situation because "their [State Owned Enterprises] employee strength has increased since 2017, and we are adding deputy CEOs and all of that."

Instructively, he continued, in order to control the situation, the government must implement drastic steps, such as reducing the number of workers on its payroll.

We must implement a lean government strategy throughout all levels of government, not only the central government, to improve efficiency.

In view of the nation's current economic situation, which has forced government to seek assistance from the International Monetary Fund, several Ghanaians had pressed President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to remove Mr. Ofori-Atta from office (IMF).

Additionally, the Minority in Parliament has submitted a motion to condemn Ofori-Atta.
