Today's government meeting with CETAG members on strike

The Fair Wages Commission on behalf of the Ministry of Labour and Employment Relations (MLER) has extended an invitation to the Colleges of Education Teachers Association Ghana (CETAG) leadership and other interested parties to a meeting on Monday, August 19.

Among other things, the gathering will address the concerns of CETAG members who have been participating in a countrywide strike for the past two months, which has caused all 46 of the nation's colleges of education to suspend their academic operations.

The heads of the Public Financial Management Unit (CPMU), the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), the Director General of GTEC, the President of CETAG, the Ministry of Finance, and the Director Tertiary of the Ministry of Education are among the other stakeholders invited to the conference.

On June 14, CETAG members at all 46 Colleges of Education went on strike in protest of the government's slow implementation of their agreed service terms and the arbitral award issued by the National Labour Commission.

Among their requests are that each member get one month's compensation for any additional work completed in 2022 and that public institutions apply agreed-upon rates of allowances to CETAG members who deserve them.

The deadlock has stopped academic activity on all campuses of education colleges, which has an impact on instruction and student learning.

Consequently, the College of Education Students Association leadership has suggested that the institutions be closed so that the students may return home while the matter was being handled.

The government has fiercely objected to this, claiming that CETAG has made progress and that they will soon return to teach on campus.

In a single sentence, Prof. Samuel Atintono, President of Princof, gave the country the assurance that they were prepared to adjust the academic schedule so that classes would resume as usual as soon as the CETAG members returned to school.
