According to a recent national survey done by Global InfoAnalytics, Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and former Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyerematen are deadlocked for the party's leadership ahead of the 2024 elections.
The surveys taken between the 31st of December 2022 and the 15th of January 2023 suggest that the battle to head the NPP is a dead tie among NPP supporters, with Dr Bawumia losing the slight advantage he had against Mr Kyeremanten in October 2022.
The survey currently shows Dr. Bawumia and Mr. Kyerematen tied at 40% of NPP votes.
However, Mr Kyerematen's lead against Dr Bawumia among general voters has shrunk from 41% to 32%, compared to 44% to 31% in October 2022.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, a New Patriotic Party Member of Parliament for Assin Central, is in third place with 14% of the vote.
The NPP has yet to announce a date for its presidential primaries in order to choose a candidate for the 2024 elections.
Mr Kyerematen, who resigned, is expected to compete for the position alongside former Food and Agriculture Minister Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto and former Railways Minister Joe Ghartey, who has also expressed his desire to run.
The president's job approval rating rose significantly from 26% in October to 32% in January 2023, while his disapproval dropped substantially from 69% in October to 59% in January 2023, according to the survey.
