Labour Ministry will meet with striking teachers once more on new GES chief

Today, November 7, 2022, representatives from the three teacher unions on strike will meet with the Employment and Labour Ministry to resume discussions about the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Following their demand that Dr. Nkansah's appointment be revoked, the unions announced a strike on Friday, November 4.

An earlier interaction with the Ministry resulted in a deadlock.

In an interview, the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), one of the unions, voiced dissatisfaction with the Education Ministry for not responding to their concerns sooner.

"The Education Ministry did not issue the invitation to even show up and jaw-jaw. Instead of sitting down with us to talk about the issues, they were preferring to spar with us in the media during news conferences. We are thus on strike and anticipate that our demands will be met at the meeting today.

Bright Wereko-Brobby, the deputy minister of employment and labor relations, expressed optimism that the issues raised by the teachers will be resolved.

"We can get down and talk about this issue. I, therefore, have hope that nothing bad will occur. After our meeting, we will examine and address the issues they have highlighted by Monday.

The unions had asked for more time in order to get the opinions of its members. They have campaigned for the appointment of a career teacher as the head of GES.
