Reports that special forces from the United Kingdom are being sent to Ghana to aid in the fight against terrorism have been denied by the government.
The Telegraph, a British daily, said Wednesday that after being forced to evacuate all of its soldiers from Mali, Britain is in talks with Ghana about sending special forces there.
The information about British special forces is untrue, the Government of Ghana wishes to say. According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, "Neither Ghana nor any other member of the Accra Initiative has discussed any such request with any partner or considered the involvement of foreign forces in any of the operations.
According to the ministry, the Ghanaian government and the British government have not spoken about sending troops to Ghana.
Parts of the statement included, "The Government of Ghana has no relations with the UK Government intended at sending UK soldiers to Ghana for the purposes of operations as detailed in the report.
It went on to say that the Accra Initiative's real goal is to stop terrorism from spreading from the Sahel region and to combat transnational organized crime along member states' shared borders.
