Due to the selection of the new GES chief, the teacher unions have threatened to strike.

Following the nomination of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, three teacher unions have threatened to quit their jobs.

They are the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, the Ghana National Association of Teachers, and the National President of the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT).

Since Dr. Eric Nkansah's appointment on October 19, the unions have challenged the decision, claiming that the new GES Director-General is unqualified to hold the job.

For instance, the Ghana National Association of Teachers gave the government until November 4, 2022, to remove Dr. Eric Nkansah's appointment.

On the other side, the government has stated that unions do not have the authority to choose who is chosen.

The government needs to pay attention to the unions, said Angel Carbonu, national president of NAGRAT, in an interview.

In addition, he attacked Kwasi Kwarteng, the PRO for the Education Ministry, who had previously criticized the unions' position.

Mr. Kwarteng recently opined that the unions ought to prioritize teacher welfare before political appointments.

In response, Mr. Carbonu questioned, "Do you believe you have what it takes to tell me what I should do or what I shouldn't do when you are appointing someone to come and supervise over me, a professional, you Kwasi Kwarteng, a political actor?"
