The planned walkout by four employee unions at Ghana's public institutions over working conditions has been postponed.
The associations are the Ghana Association of University Administration, the Senior Staff Association of Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG), the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG), and the Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU) (GAUA).
The Unions threatened to go on an extended strike starting today, Thursday, October 13, 2022, if the government didn't address their concerns about their working conditions.
The four worker unions, however, have decided to postpone their planned strike until Wednesday, October 2022 in order for "meetings with the Employer to take place" following a discussion with the NLC.
The Commission ordered the Employer to meet with the four (4) Labor Unions on Friday, October 14, 2022, and Monday, October 17, 2022, to "discuss conditions of payment and other connected topics" after its deliberations.
On October 19, 2022, at 3 p.m., the Commission will receive a report from the parties.
The unions issued a statement saying, "As a result of this development, we write to announce that the planned strike action by the Labor Unions at the Public Universities in Ghana, which was to begin today, October 13, 2022, has been postponed for the meetings with the Employer to take place."
The unions additionally stated that "should the meetings with the employers achieve no resolution," they will go on an indefinite strike.
The four labor unions are angry over a "blatant unilateral variation of service in the face of unfavorable economic realities," as they put it.
They ask the government and other interested parties to revoke the order that jeopardizes the conditions of service for university employees.
