The National Tenants' Union of Ghana's leadership has voiced its extreme dissatisfaction with the housing policy recommendations made in the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) 2024 Housing Manifesto.
From 2016, the union claims that the NPP's housing strategy has been marked by obvious contradictions, unfulfilled pledges, and rehashed ideas.
This follows Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's announcement at the party's manifesto launch on Sunday, August 18, in Takoradi, that the National Housing Programme would be implemented by the next NPP administration to encourage the private sector to give Ghanaians access to decent, affordable housing in livable, well-planned settlements.
The National Tenants' Union of Ghana's Secretary-General, Fredrick Opoku, responded to the pledge by saying that the recent manifesto launch just validated the worries and anxieties of the union's members.
"Every year promises, every election year, we hear this guy come to deliver promises, and we are really concerned about them.
"As Secretary-General of the National Tenants Union of Ghana, I was involved in numerous teams and negotiations, but all to no effect. Therefore, I was taken aback when the NPP presented rehashed promises, while failing to deliver on those made in 2016 and 2020."
