Treat Bawku conflict culprits as criminals - Nitiwul charges military

The government will send 500 more military soldiers to Bawku in the Upper East Region next week, according to Defence Minister Dominic Nitiwul.

According to the Minister, 400 troops are presently stationed in the village to help with the violence.

As a result, the Minister has directed the military to punish those participating in the disturbances as criminals, claiming that the dispute is no longer related to chieftaincy problems.

Dominic Nitiwul was speaking on the House floor on Wednesday. He emphasized that the administration is determined to solve the issue.

"What is occurring now has nothing to do with chieftaincy. It is criminal behavior. Those involved are crooks. I have instructed personnel of the armed forces to treat such individuals as though they were criminals. The government has done everything it can to guarantee that Bawku remains quiet. We have increased the number of soldiers in Bawku from 50 to 400, therefore we will deploy another 500 military task force to Bawku alone next week."

Mahama Ayariga, Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, accused the military of firing indiscriminately into indigenes fleeing for shelter, killing seven of them.

Ayariga then petitioned the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over the alleged military death.
