The new Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has hailed his election as the party's leader as a "call to duty."
"My election suggests that the NDC is not done with me yet. "I consider this election as a summons to duty; the obligation is huge," he said in his victory speech to conclude the party's National Executive Elections on Sunday.
Mr Nketiah, who had been the NDC's General Secretary for 17 years, deposed Mr Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, who had been the party's Chairman since 2018, but had failed his re-election campaign.
Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the NDC's previous Propaganda Secretary, has been appointed as the party's new General Secretary.
Mr Joseph Yammin, a former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, also took home the title of National Organiser.
While thanking the delegates for their faith in the new National Executive Members, Mr Nketiah stated that his first priority would be to unify the party's rank and file for victory in the 2024 legislative and presidential elections.
"This is a triumph for the NDC, and their setback (losing candidates) is a message that the party requires them to serve in other roles," he stated.
He defined the NDC's National Executive Congress as an election to "restore our country's independence," adding, "We are willing to sacrifice everything, including our lives, to guarantee that the country is restored."
Former President John Dramani Mahama greeted all of the new leadership and thanked the party's delegates for their sacrifices and contributions to the party's advancement.
"I believe the delegates have the utmost judgment, and they have told us exactly what they want. It is our responsibility to follow the pattern," he stated.
Mr. Mahama advised the incoming CEOs to "cut their festivities short" and get right to work.
"(Election) 2024 has the most at risk, and the CEOs must grasp the duties that have been placed on their shoulders," he added.
