The strike by teacher unions in Ghana against the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as Director-General of the Ghana Education Service has received the backing of the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG).
Similar appointments in the civil service and the local government service, it declared in a statement, "are not conducive to industrial peace."
The legal challenge against the Registrar's appointment at the Births and Deaths Registry, for instance, was mentioned by CLOGSAG.
Thus, in order for "industrial peace to exist," the union pleaded with the government to abide by the rules for choosing public officials.
It is important to note that the nomination of public officers under the president's authority should follow the recommendation of the relevant service's governing council, as delivered in conjunction with the Public Services Commission
CLOGSAG also said that it will conduct an urgent meeting to discuss these issues.
Since November 4, three teacher unions have been on strike.
Since then, the three teacher unions have been asked by the National Labour Commission (NLC) to immediately end their strike and resume talks with the administration.
The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana are the three unions that are on strike (CCT).
